Mia Park: Chic(k)-on-the-Go-Go

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Mia Park featured on the cover of the Jan/Feb 2012 issue of YogaChicago

As an avid athelete, dancer, actress, and community organizer, Mia Park has found that “yoga [has] provided both the physical well-being and inner peace that she needed to balance her busy lifestyle,” telling YogaChicago in their Jan/Feb 2012 article that features her as teacher of the month.  Her background in martial arts and gymnastics led her to yoga in 2002.  She has since taken her yoga practice and made it central to her life.  She turned to Moksha Yoga for classes, becoming certified as a ParaYoga® Level 1 teacher (the only one in Chicago) after completing a 200-hour teacher training with Rod Stryker.  Beyond just asanas, Mia employs chanting, pranayama (breathing), and kriya (energy techniques) favoring the Tantric principles of ParaYoga® to help quiet the mind.

Mia’s dynamic presence has led her down many different creative paths throughout her life, including her role as a co-host of a public access television cable show, Chic-A-Go-Go, for over 14 years.  Jake, a colleague on the show and also Jason Scholder’s cousin, introduced Mia to Jason and the (then) new egg-shaped block.  They were quickly acquainted, (more…)

Yoga Bloom Pink Egg - Supporting the Search for the Cure to Breast Cancer

Three Minute Egg has partnered with Cora Wen to create the Yoga Bloom THANK PINK Egg.  The Yoga Bloom Egg, now available in the Good Karma Eggs section of our Products page, is a Hot Pink Namastegg in honor of its devotion to breast cancer awareness.  One side features the Three Minute Egg logo as found on all of our Eggs, and the other side is adorned with the Yoga Bloom logo, which is beautifully crafted.  In accord with our commitment to Cora, 10% of the sales from these Eggs will be donated directly toward breast cancer awareness and education.

Many recent studies have pointed to yoga as a holistic supplement to breast cancer treatment, revealing many significant health benefits and an overall improved quality of life.  Complications such as fatigue and pain have been showed to be significantly lowered as a result of certain types of gentle yoga, including restorative and therapeutic.

Breast cancer awareness is an issue that is close to Cora’s heart, as everyone in her maternal lineage has had a battle with it, thus making her a very high risk candidate.  Having this in mind she embraces each day with full awareness of her body and active self-care.  Her work with yoga and women living with or recovering from breast cancer is extensive, by aiming to transform into “a positive experience for ourselves to live life fully, and live every moment fully and completely.”

IYNAUS Responds to NY Times Article “How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body”

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

On January 8th, 2012, the New York Times Sunday Magazine published an article stating that “the vast majority of people should give up yoga altogether,” as it’s “simply too likely to cause harm,” citing Iyengar Yoga teacher Glenn Black, who now resides in New York.  In the first Sunday edition of the new year, the article has stirred quite a controversial backlash from the yoga community, with many stepping forward with their response to the negative slants of the “dangers of yoga” that the article claims.

Of the responses that have come forth, that of Chris Beach, president of the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (IYNAUS), who consulted with many Senior Iyengar Yoga teachers and sent a response letter to the New York Times, stands out.  The response letter points out many errors that they believed the article contained as well expressing dissent with its negative tone, in hopes that it will be published to put these issues to rest:

To the Editor:

If yoga hurts, it is not yoga. A student’s overreaching ego, a teacher’s ignorance – many causes may lead to injury while doing yoga, but yoga itself cannot be blamed. (more…)

Trains, Rickshaws and Lots of Walking (India, Day 3)

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

There are really only two ways to travel in India: luxury class, or sense-of-adventure class.

*For the record, I actually prefer the latter as I enjoy seeing the people, being among the people, and talking to the people whose country I am visiting.  So I want to preface the rest of this blog by noting that I am not complaining one bit about having taken the train and walked a half-marathon to get there.  It was a really fun day.

Led by a budget-conscious Dutch yoga teacher (Pascal) who wanted us all to have a real Indian adventure, we set out today for a trip to the Karla Caves about 90 minutes outside Pune by train.

I was under the impression that we’d hired a car and this trip would be easy.  I had forgotten something of critical importance: India, while wonderful, is seldom easy.  We spent most of the day walking, waiting and/or negotiating with people from all walks of life.

Home of Yoga (India, Day 2)

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

I couldn’t believe it was already 9:22 when I woke up this morning, only minutes before my loyal Rickshaw driver, Nana, would arrive to fetch me and my suitcases in order to deliver me to my new apartment — just about 20 minutes walking from “The Institute” [i.e. the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute, or RIMYI.]  That doesn’t include crossing six lanes of the most terrifying traffic I’ve ever seen.  There is only one way across.  (Think Eddie Murphy’s special needs brother in the movie Bowfinger, trying to scurry across the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles, to complete a scene.)  The fact that I was able to find my way back tonight was nothing short of a miracle.  It really could have gone either way.

But, more importantly, today was my first Indian Yoga class!!!  Mr. Iyengar is under the weather, and even if he were well, I am not experienced enough to attend his classes.  One must apply two years in advance and have at least 8 years of experience in Iyengar Yoga.  I have one.  However, I have a ten-year visa, so there’s hope!  Mr. Iyengar will be 101 years old by then.  If he’s still teaching, I am SO coming back!

I learned a lot in tonight’s class, but before I get into the yoga, here are the most important things I learned: (more…)

Joan White Writes Three Minute Egg Product Review for IYNAUS

Friday, December 30th, 2011

In the Fall 2011/Winter 2012 blog for the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (IYNAUS), one of America’s senior Iyengar Yoga teachers, Joan White, has written a wonderful review of the Three Minute Egg.  Joan brings the conversation to the table by admitting that she “understand[s] the resistance to yoga props that are not yet being sold by the Institute in Pune,” however with careful and deliberate experimentation she has found a positive response amongst her introduction of the Eggs to students in her workshops around the world.

Joan writes that she has even given some Eggs to B.K.S. Iyengar for Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI), the heart and soul of Iyengar Yoga.  RIMYI is located in Pune, Maharashtra, where Iyengar resides.  Jason will be headed over to India on January 4th for a month-long hangout with the Iyengar (more…)

Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce Names Jason Entrepreneur of the Month

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

December, 2011: the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce has graciously named owner and inventor of the Three Minute Egg®, Jason Scholder, their Entrepreneur of the Month.  The Asheville Chamber made the announcement in their December newsletter, detailing how they arrived at their decision with the following kind words:

The Chamber is pleased to recognize Jason Scholder, owner and inventor of the Three Minute Egg®, as Entrepreneur of the Month for December, 2011. Three Minute Egg® is an innovative yoga prop that encourages stability and enables users to safely maintain postures.

The Three Minute Egg® was born out of Jason’s personal experience with back pain and a desire for better and more comfortable ways to help stretch his back. Jason infused a creative approach into the concepts of traditional yoga props to design a new ergonomic yoga support with a curvature that fits the natural contours of the body.

“I have my work cut out for me in an environment where traditions date back for millennia, gurus have the last word and blocks have been status-quo for years,” Jason notes on his Web site.  “The need for change isn’t always obvious.  But when better options reveal themselves, shift happens.”

Armed with a crash course in entrepreneurship, Jason launched the Three Minute Egg® with personal capital, modest funding from friends and a small business loan from Advantage West. The concept has quickly been embraced by many health and fitness instructors.

“Thanks to the grassroots evangelism of numerous early-adapters, word of the Egg is spreading.  Its acceptance in the global yoga community is increasing,” Jason said.

Prior to creating Three Minute Egg®, Jason was a cabinet and furniture maker and an artist.  Jason is also the founder of Reel Change Films, Inc., a full-service video production company that he launched in 2007.

We are very grateful to the Chamber for honoring Jason and the Three Minute Egg® in this way, and moreover for their continued support for locally owned, independent and small businesses that help keep the Asheville economy sustainable and thriving!
