Janet Stone: The Radiant Mom

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

“Throughout my adventures, travels & movement from motherhood to teaching yoga I’ve found that I always have my Three Minute Eggs with me (this has created both curiosity and humor at customs). They are integral to my practice, from creating a little more space for my hips to open, to deepening restorative poses with gentle yet powerful support behind my heart.” - Janet Stone

Music, laughter, and a journey of the heart are the values that permeate Janet Stone’s approach to Vinyasa yoga.  Having transcended many layers of personal transformation, through family, travels and yoga, Janet has emerged a powerful yogi, offering a vibrant presence that’s spreading like wildfire.  Describing her own practice as “dynamic, prana movin’, heart-expanding, rough [yet] tender, fluid and steady,” the energy she emits is contagious and students love her.”*

Janet’s roots burrow deep into the soil of beautiful Northern California, where she came of age on a wide-open, free-loving hippie farm.  It was there that she began to develop a profound, natural connection to the Earth.  The farm was a haven of warm, cheerful brightness.  An equal emphasis was placed on hard work & bailing hay, as swimming naked & dancing freely.

A passion for adventure, physical challenge, and flexibility has led Janet down many paths.  Life after college landed her in Los Angeles where she spent 11 years funneling her perceptive energy into television and film.  Her spirit eventually broke free of Hollywood and led her to (more…)

Marianne Wells: The Garden Goddess

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

These days, you can find Marianne Wells in The Goddess Garden of Cahuita, Costa Rica, home of the Marianne Wells Yoga School.  Along the path of a small, winding creek among the gentle jungle trees, Marianne fosters a rigorously spiritual environment, helping teachers-in-training find the path that speaks to them as they embark on their unique and personal journey.  Her yoga teacher certification programs are some of the most comprehensive in the world.

With a strong background in both teaching and motivational speaking, it comes as no surprise that Marianne’s approach to her trainings are just as much philosophical as they are methodical.  Her offerings include a 200RYT Yoga Alliance Teacher Training, as well as 500 RYT & IAYT Yoga Therapy Trainings.  Students travel from over 30 countries seeking her guidance.   It’s not only asanas, pranayamas and mudras they are seeking – but also a completeness of mind, body and spirit.  Through her instruction students gain a deepened sense of spirituality, realizing the value of self in one’s own instruction as well as recognizing that of the students, gauging and evolving what’s essential for them to learn.

Marianne’s intuition and insight translate beyond (more…)

Three Minute Egg Buyer’s Guide: How Do I Know Which Eggs to Buy?

Monday, June 27th, 2011

The  Three Minute Egg® is not simply a replacement for the traditional square yoga blocks, although as people gain experience with the Eggs their blocks are often cast aside.  The Three Minute Egg® is more than that.  It’s a new way of thinking about yoga props.  Even as its inventor I am constantly surprised by its versatility (every teacher seems to find some unique application for the Eggs), and its versatility brings with it the need for some clarification.

Now that you’ve decided you want some Eggs, there’s a good chance you have a few questions. Can I get any colors I want? What’s a Hard-Boiled Egg? Do all the orange Eggs have signatures on?  In fact, you may be thinking (in a Ricky Ricardo sort of voice), “Jaaaason, you got some esplaining to do!”  And so I will elaborate.

We currently offer 3 variations on the original Three Minute Egg®: Namasteggs, Signature Eggs and Hard-Boiled Eggs.

All of these Eggs are the same size and shape. The Hard-Boiled Eggs (only available in Gray) are harder and a tiny bit heavier. The difference in hardness is important and noticeable. The difference in weight (unless you’re holding a gigantic box) is not. The general principle is this: if the Eggs are in your hands (think Upward Facing Dog), and your weight is on the Eggs (or any arm-balancing pose), you want those Eggs to be Hard-Boiled.  For the most part 2 is enough, though in some instances you may want more.  If you’re standing on an Egg, it absolutely needs to be Hard-Boiled.  If the Eggs are supporting your head, spine, ribs or chest (think supported Backbends or forward restorative twist) and you’re planning to stay there a while, you will be more comfortable and better able to relax into the slightly softer Namasteggs (available in 7 colors other than Gray).  A minimum of 4 is recommended (3 under the back/chest and one under the head).  This golden ratio of 2 Hard-Boiled Eggs to 4 Namasteggs is what led us to create the Breakfast of Yogis and Yogi Meal (the only difference being that the Yogi Meal comes with our introductory DVD).  (more…)

Thank you everyone for ‘Yakking” about us.  We won!  We have officially joined the ranks of “Most Yakkable!!!”

Below is the list of amazing things people have said about the Eggs.  Thanks to everyone who contributed.  Happy reading!  (and it appears you can keep on yakking about the Eggs if you like, so go for it!)

I am a pediatric physical therapist and I have been using three minute eggs for several months to help the children learn about their bodies, support their posture, and be playful at the same time. The children love them. We continue to find wonderful ways to use them.

I love the 3 minute eggs, they have an endless amount of uses and I find them to be very valuable not only in my own home practice, I like to use them for arm balances, but for many of my students who are dealing with issues like arthritis, carpel tunnel and other aches and pains in general. I love the way they can move through a group practice without having to adjust and readjust the bricks. Have not used Silver Linings yet, but they sound great!

I teach yoga in Madrid, Spain, and I first learnt about the 3 minute egg through an ad in Yoga Journal magazine. I found the idea so clean, and so simple that it seemed almost brilliant to me. I have some students with problems in their wrists that are finally practicing arm balances, thanks to the eggs. Other students love them for opening up their tight backs, they feel great. Definitely, a yoga prop that’s worth a try. Hard to believe nobody thought of it until now! (more…)

Seniors and the Three Minute Egg®

Seniors doing yoga

The Three Minute Egg® is great for seniors!

I love the Three Minute Egg®!  You introduced them to me when I was in LA for the Yoga Therapy Symposium in 2009.

I love them for me because they are wonderful to open up my spine in bed or on a yoga mat.  I lay over them top of spine to bottom with the highest part of the egg at the thoracic spine and they help me fall off to sleep and also to wake up in the morning.  Sounds contradictory I know but it’s true.

If I’m feeling overwhelmed and emotional (more…)

Occupational Therapy and the Three Minute Egg®

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

I immediately fell in love with the Eggs when I received them last Wednesday.  Your Three Minute Eggs are well made and well designed. The shape, texture and weight of each Egg invites the body to trust its surface!

I am an Occupational Therapist in private practice in San Francisco.  I am a yoga student, but not a yoga teacher.  I work with young children, school age children, adolescents, and young adults.  My clients usually present with developmental, motor, attention and often learning disorders. The severity of their challenges range from mildly evident to very significant and in many cases they possess good to gifted intelligence. I have also followed several autistic students from preschool to young adulthood.

I use yoga as a “therapeutic modality” in my work together with other therapeutic tools as I address (more…)

LA Yoga Ayurveda and Health Magazine Reviews the Three Minute Egg

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

Blocks have been by far my favorite Yoga prop. I find there’s nothing better to use for removing blockages, for needed support, for propping up body parts in restorative poses. Well, ordinary blocks may need to be stacked aside now that I’ve discovered the 3-Minute Egg.

Fortunately, these are eggs that are vegan-friendly, so named for their oblong shape. They’re fashioned from the same foam material as standard blocks, but their rounded shape gives them the perfect curve for supporting the spine, the neck or the low back in any of the restorative asana interludes that make it possible for me to edit this magazine for hours on end hunched over a computer screen.  The rounded edges of the eggs also make them a nice hand-hold for lunges and jump-backs in held poses and vinayasa sequences.

The company’s owner and inventor Jason Scholder has adapted them for use in his own practice and Chakra Valuehe’s a passionate advocate for their use. He’s not the only one. The other day, I had to scavenge my set from my housemate’s bedrooms, where they had decided to enlist the eggs for their own restorative practices. Find Scholder and the three-minute eggs in the Vendor Village at Bhakti Fest, September  9 -12, or online: threeminuteegg.com.

Yoga Deals Reviews Three Minute Egg®

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

I feel a combination of gratitude and astonishment when people review the Three Minute Egg® and have this many positive things to say.  I of course think it’s a great product, but I’m supposed to feel that way.  I invented it!  When other people take the time to share their thoughts and recommendations, all I can say is, “Thank you.”  So today I am saying a belated ‘Thank you’ to Yoga Deals for doing such a nice write-up on my product.  If you have anything you’d like to add, please do!  And please share this with your yoga community.  I really appreciate it!

design within stretch – three minute egg – product review

the three minute egg is the new block on the mat, but what’s with the name? according to the founder and ‘recovering’ furniture maker, jason (aka creative dude with a bad back), the name was hatched (i couldn’t resist) because of the “great benefits [that] can come from a practice where one holds challenging poses for up to 3 minutes & restorative poses for at least 3 or more.” jason also mentioned, that we should be on the lookout for… (more…)

Wrist Management – Part 1: Yoga to Strengthen Weak Wrists

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010
Up Dog

By cheating your hands forward slightly, you can reduce your wrist-crease and pain

I have been told there are two kinds of yogis.  Yogis who have wrist problems now, and yogis who may develop them later.

When healthy, we tend to take our wrists for granted. We don’t even think about them. Our thoughts race past them on the way to our hands, where most of the real action happens. It’s no surprise, then, that when we feel pain in one or both wrists, we ask ourselves, “What did I do to deserve this?” Or worse, we don’t ask ourselves anything at all and just keep on doing what we’re doing — making things worse.

The tissues that pass through the wrist help give your fingers their remarkable dexterity, but the wrist is the (more…)
