Elephant Journal Reviews the Three Minute Egg

Emma Blue's own private "Kathryn Budig moment" with the Eggs

Yoga teacher and writer Emma Blue has decided that indeed the Eggs are not the Tchotchkes of yoga props she once feared.  Instead, she has found that they “seem to roll out as an extension of the body.”  We are thrilled that she has translated this excitement into a review that was published earlier today on the holistic wellness blog, ElephantJournal.

Emma tell us that she worked her way through the Special Edition Alignment & Flow DVD; she also points to the encyclopedia list of asanas found in the 3ME blog section Andasanas as well as the plethora of free video tutorials, which are shorter in length.

Unlike many teachers trained in the school of Ashtanga Yoga, Emma favors the use of props, so she rolled out her mat and tested out the Eggs with her students.  They found (more…)

IYNAUS Responds to NY Times Article “How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body”

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

On January 8th, 2012, the New York Times Sunday Magazine published an article stating that “the vast majority of people should give up yoga altogether,” as it’s “simply too likely to cause harm,” citing Iyengar Yoga teacher Glenn Black, who now resides in New York.  In the first Sunday edition of the new year, the article has stirred quite a controversial backlash from the yoga community, with many stepping forward with their response to the negative slants of the “dangers of yoga” that the article claims.

Of the responses that have come forth, that of Chris Beach, president of the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (IYNAUS), who consulted with many Senior Iyengar Yoga teachers and sent a response letter to the New York Times, stands out.  The response letter points out many errors that they believed the article contained as well expressing dissent with its negative tone, in hopes that it will be published to put these issues to rest:

To the Editor:

If yoga hurts, it is not yoga. A student’s overreaching ego, a teacher’s ignorance – many causes may lead to injury while doing yoga, but yoga itself cannot be blamed. (more…)

Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce Names Jason Entrepreneur of the Month

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

December, 2011: the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce has graciously named owner and inventor of the Three Minute Egg®, Jason Scholder, their Entrepreneur of the Month.  The Asheville Chamber made the announcement in their December newsletter, detailing how they arrived at their decision with the following kind words:

The Chamber is pleased to recognize Jason Scholder, owner and inventor of the Three Minute Egg®, as Entrepreneur of the Month for December, 2011. Three Minute Egg® is an innovative yoga prop that encourages stability and enables users to safely maintain postures.

The Three Minute Egg® was born out of Jason’s personal experience with back pain and a desire for better and more comfortable ways to help stretch his back. Jason infused a creative approach into the concepts of traditional yoga props to design a new ergonomic yoga support with a curvature that fits the natural contours of the body.

“I have my work cut out for me in an environment where traditions date back for millennia, gurus have the last word and blocks have been status-quo for years,” Jason notes on his Web site.  “The need for change isn’t always obvious.  But when better options reveal themselves, shift happens.”

Armed with a crash course in entrepreneurship, Jason launched the Three Minute Egg® with personal capital, modest funding from friends and a small business loan from Advantage West. The concept has quickly been embraced by many health and fitness instructors.

“Thanks to the grassroots evangelism of numerous early-adapters, word of the Egg is spreading.  Its acceptance in the global yoga community is increasing,” Jason said.

Prior to creating Three Minute Egg®, Jason was a cabinet and furniture maker and an artist.  Jason is also the founder of Reel Change Films, Inc., a full-service video production company that he launched in 2007.

We are very grateful to the Chamber for honoring Jason and the Three Minute Egg® in this way, and moreover for their continued support for locally owned, independent and small businesses that help keep the Asheville economy sustainable and thriving!

Annie Carpenter Contributes to Yoga Journal Column “Basics”

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

In the November 2011 issue of Yoga Journal, Egg Signateur Annie Carpenter was a contributing writer for the column Basics, which is the first of a year-long series for the magazine.  She sets the foundation for her series by discussing the yogic principle satya, introducing it by discussing how the grounding alignment of Mountain Pose (Tadasana) sets up a successful, balanced Tree Pose (Vrksasana).

“Satya teaches yogis to think, speak, and act in alignment with what is true….  Tree Pose,” Annie tells us, “offers an opportunity to practice this principle by aligning your spine in a way that aligns the truth of your body.”  While Mountain Pose is comparatively easy (standing on two legs) it is the absence of one grounded leg as you move into Tree Pose that challenges your alignment and reveals your hips’ true flexibility.  If you immediately attempt to mimic your teacher and point your knee straight to the side, (more…)

Asheville Citizen-Times Features Three Minute Egg

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Last week Jason was invited to sit down for an interview with local newspaper Asheville Citizen-Times. They had decided to feature him in an article that appeared in the Sunday, October 24th issue on the front page of the Business section, as part of an ongoing series on Entrepreneurship in Asheville, NC.  His background as a self-made entrepreneur “has taken him from a Grateful Dead concert vendor, professional artist and cabinetmaker to filmmaker and professional poker player,” developing a unique skill set that led to the innovative of the Three Minute Egg®.  In a time when the economy continues to struggle and unemployment rates at high, yoga is a thriving industry in which mom-and-pop operations are able to meet demands and cater to the yogi customer, Yoga Journal points out, highlighting this article and pointing to Jason as a success story.

Having endured years of back injuries, Jason turned to yoga following a bike and car accident both in 2000.  The invention of the Egg came after moving cross-country to Asheville, seeking a committed ‘spiritual evolution’ and personal regimen of yoga.   (more…)

Jason Crandell Suggests Eggs for Backbends in Yoga Journal

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

In the October, 2011 issue of Yoga Journal, Jason Crandell’s column “Align + Refine” discusses how one slight adjustment to your alignment can drastically broaden the powerful effects of backbends — especially with the aid of props.  His article translates the alignment adjustment through three common backbends, with the Three Minute Egg featured prominently in two of them.

The adjustment is simple, Jason says: tilt your pelvis backward in a posterior tilt to initiate the bend, and lightly draw in your lower abdomen.  A little bit goes a long way; it helps to lengthen the lower back and free any strain or compression.  The additional use of yoga props along with this technique helps to reinforce its effects. Los Angeles Times features the Three Minute Egg!

Monday, August 29th, 2011

We have some exciting news coming straight to your laptop from us here at 3ME headquarters:  the Three Minute Egg has been featured in (drum roll please) the Los Angeles Times – Health section as innovative yoga gear to try, and first on the list at that!

The article, titled “Gear: A few new angles for yoga,” broaches the subject of the proliferation of yoga innovations now that yoga has caught on in the States.  New experiences and ideas have generated a multitude of modifications on the traditional straps, mats and blocks by inspired inventors, such as the first man to lay an Egg, Jason Scholder!

That’s where we come in, referenced as a tool to help give extra reach and simultaneously reduce hand and wrist strain.  This is a direct quote from the article: (more…)

Product Review on About.com

More good news! About.com recently reviewed the Three Minute Egg® and recommended it is as a yoga block alternative for several popular yoga poses.

Here’s a direct quote from the article:

“…if you have ever come to lie over the block in a heart opener, you have undoubtedly noticed that its blunt shape can be a little uncomfortable. Here’s where you need the ergonomically designed Three Minute Egg.”

The review continues on and explains how the Egg helped solve three specific Yoga problems: Reaching a comfortable position in the Supported Supine Heart Opener; achieving better alignment in Mountain Pose; and performing Ardha Chandrasana without placing too much weight on a prop.

The Three Minute Egg is a great alternative for anyone who wants a better yoga block – one that acts as an extension of their body – thanks About.com!
