Finding My Peace with Yoga Props

Getting started in yoga wasn’t easy for me.  My biggest obstacle was simply summoning up the courage to walk through the door.  For years I shunned the yoga world in favor of a gym membership, only to traumatize my spine with a slipped disc after overexerting myself on a weight machine. One surgery later I was miraculously able to sit, stand, and walk again without any nerve pain. My medically-restored mobility, however, came at the expense of my flexibility.

My doctor prescribed for me a daily yoga and pilates regimen.  While I was curious to try it, my fears descended upon me each time I arrived at the studio. I’d walk into a class and position myself strategically toward the back of the room.  My goal was to avoid judgment from those who seemingly conquered any posture with ease, while I struggled simply to touch my toes.  My silent need to compete with the advanced yogis who surrounded me blinded me to the (more…)

6 Ways to Reduce Back Pain

Back pain can be debilitating. It can hurt whenever you move; it can cause sleep loss; and it can stop you from living your life as fully as you deserve. Yoga is a great way to relieve the pain, and a combination of practices to holistically reduce or eliminate the pain altogether can do even more.  Here are a few things we’ve found really helpful.

1. BUsing Three Minute Egg Seated in a Chaire conscious of your posture in your everyday life and correct it when you’re sitting, when you’re moving, and especially when you’re doing any back exercises.  Next time you’re seated at your computer, try placing a couple of Eggs behind your back — we recommend the mid-back.

2. Try gentle, restorative yoga. Learn to target muscles that are tight and painful with careful stretches.

3. Swim. It’s an excellent non-impact exercise that works all your muscles, but it’s particularly good for your back. (more…)
